Dozens of colorful kayaks, manned by mannequins, floated on the polluted waters of the Pinheiros River in São Paulo.
Thousands of people cross the city’s bridges and expressways every day, and the intention was to remind them of the existence of an abandoned part of the metropolis. The installation recreated the rowing activities organized by São Paulo clubs until the 1920s.
Today, the river is completely contaminated, a result of neglect by both the public and the government. During the exhibition’s final week, a massive island of trash stranded the kayaks and altered the composition of the artwork.
