Students take part in cultural workshops with artist Eduardo Srur
Reinterpretations of artworks made with plastic waste will be part of the “Paisagem Plástica” exhibition at the end of the month; the project is supported by the Department of Education and sponsored by Vedacit
About 350 students from the Itatiba municipal school system are taking part in the project to create works for the Paisagem Plástica exhibition, conceived by artist Eduardo Srur, known for his urban interventions, especially in São Paulo. The project was made possible by the Cultural Action Program (ProAC) of the São Paulo State Department of Culture, Economy and Creative Industries, with sponsorship from Vedacit, which has a plant in the city, and support from the Itatiba City Hall through its Department of Education.
The proposal combines art and environmental education by using plastic waste supplied by the artist as raw material. Between October 5 and 9, students from the 3rd to the 9th grade of elementary school at Emeb Profa. Marina Araújo Pires, in Jardim das Nações, took part in creative workshops led by Srur's team. The activities also included three classes from the Reencontro Project, guided by the Center for Psychosocial and Inclusive Educational Care (Caepi), part of the Itatiba Department of Education.
On October 28, the school will host the exhibition, which will bring together around 80 works, including pieces by the students and works by Eduardo Srur. The show will be open to families, the school community and the public of Itatiba. At the opening, the artist will also lead guided tours to bring visitors closer to the works.
Preparations for the workshops began in August, when the teachers at Emeb Marina met with the artist to learn about the proposal and plan the activities. The school was chosen by the Department of Education to expand cultural activities with the local community.
During the workshops, students collectively recreated works by great artists using plastic waste. The references chosen by Srur are landscapes by Brazilian artists such as Tarsila do Amaral, Alfredo Volpi, Alberto da Veiga Guignard and Djanira da Motta e Silva.
“Landscape painting opens up space to reflect on the presence of plastic waste in urban and natural environments. By turning discarded material into images, the students explore its colors and shapes and discuss how consumption and disposal affect the landscape,” says Srur.
Students from the Reencontro project show the collective work created in the workshop.
According to Srur, the project's title came to him on the road between São Paulo and Itatiba, “looking at the natural scenery and always finding some plastic waste in the landscape. It is everywhere, so why not use it to make art with future generations?”. The students' work will dialogue with the artist's works and with the intervention he will bring to the school.
